Historical Background

On the 9th of May, 1921, in the governmental department of education and political a province archives section was created. It collected and kept archives documents in order. After the province’s liquidation in November 1922 the province archives section stopped working. Mykolaiv city archives were working till 1925. When in 1925 an independent Mykolaiv okruh was created, an archives administration of Mykolaiv okrug was organized. In 1930 the okrug was liquidated and the archives administration was reorganized in local archives administration. In 1932 Mykolaiv state historical archives was created. It was subordinated to the archives administration of Odesa region.

After the creation of Mykolaiv, regional historical archives were organized. It subordinated to the archives administration of Mykolaiv region. On January 1939 the archives administration became a part of NKVS system. In April 1941 the Mykolaiv regional historical archives were called the state Archives of Mykolaiv region; in 1958 - Mykolaiv regional archives. In 1960 the archives was subordinated to archives department of Mykolaiv regional executive committee.

In 1980 Mykolaiv regional state archives were renamed for the state archives of Mykolaiv region. In 1989 the archives department of Mykolaiv regional executive committee was liquidated. All its functions were given to the state archives.

Description of Archives Holdings

The oldest recordsare dated back to 1787 – 1789. They are kept in the fund of «Records of Mykolaiv construction». It comprises valuable evidences about construction of shipyards. At the mouth of the Pivdenny Bug and the Ingul as well as the town Mykolaiv, the fortress Sebastopol, ships of the Black Sea Feet and other transport ships.

The funds of Mykolaiv military governor chancery keep the document about the foundation of the settlement, establishment of army units, the turning of the admiral settlements into suburbs. The development of Mykolaiv in the XIX cc. is fully characterized by the funds of Mykolaiv military governor chancery(1805 - 1900) andMykolaiv Mayor chancery(1900 - 1918).

The funds of city and province self government (Mykolaiv Mayor office (1805 - 1866); Mykolaiv city duma (1812 - 1920); and Mykolaiv city board (1872 - 1919); Ochakiv town council (1818 - 1866); province dums, citizen and craftsmen’s board have the documents about the social and economic development of cites.

Valuable statistical information about economics, culture, national structure of Mykolaiv, suburbs, and also provinces of Kherson that boarded it, are kept in the fund of Mykolaiv city statistical committee (1862 – 1917).

There are some funds of police, court and prison establishments: Mykolaiv city police, police officers of Mykolaiv, province courts Mykolaiv temporary prison inspection, hard labor camp; the collection of maps and drafts with plans of Mykolaiv city, Voshesensk city, Ochakiv city, the copies of governmental, quitrent, landowner’s and pesants plans of plots in Kherson province (1811 - 1911).

Among unclassified funds of period till 1917 is the fund of Ukrainian brothers- hip «Prosvita» in Mykolaiv.

Period of Ukrainian revolution (1917 - 1920) is introduced by documents from funds of Mykolaiv working and military deputates (1917 - 1918) and Revolution staff (1917); province, governmental and peasants evolutional committees, unclassified collection of documents of UPR (Ukrainian peoples republic) period.

Among the funds of moderns history the major part are the funds of local governmental institutions, military – administrational establishments, poor peasant’s committees, industrial companies agricultural organization trade organization, communal farms, transport and connection, building, financial, co-operative, organizations, educational institutions; health keeping; cultural; party and komsomol organizations. These documents characterize hard political, social and economical circumstances in Mykolaiv 1917-1998.

The information about the hunger in Mykolaiv region (1921); the organization of help to hungry are kept in documents of governmental and province committees of help to hungry; governmental and province committees of CPBU (communist’s party of Bolsheviks from Ukraine); unclassified funds of professor F. Nansen about the struggle with starvation in Mykolaiv gubernia, Mykolaiv governmental committee of American administration of helpto starving“Ara”.

Collectivizationandit’s results, economical state of created collective farms, Holodomor in Mykolaiv 1932-1933 are described by documents ofMykolaiv and Pervomaysk acting committees; district, regional and peasants council; poor peasant’s committees. Mykolaiv regional unit of agricultural collectives, regional land institute, regional court, regional prison, Mykolaiv and Pervomaysk district and regional committees of CPBU.

Mass repressions are described in document of regional, city and district committees of CPBU. These funds also have protocols of Trojka meetings (Trojka – special courts that judged cases about governmental criminals).

The period ofRomanian-German occupation is wildlydescribed in funds of different institutions and organizations of occupational government: Mykolaiv general commissariat; Mykolaiv city board,peasant’s boards, regional prefectures countrywaitingrooms,country lab our communities, police offices. In founds of Golt and Ochakiv regional prefectures, district police officers there are lists and other information about Jews and Gipsy’s in labor camps. In filtration files of citizens, departed to forced works to Germany during germane occupation of Mykolaiv, there are registration papers, entry forms, the protocols of interrogations, and the documents about checking uncertain information, the conclusions of checking commissions. The history of underground movement is described in report, reporting notes, certificates, of party and soviet organizations, the head’s of movement papers.

In archives more than 50 private funds are saved: M.Arkas, S.Haiduchenko, O.Hmirow, V.Rumin, A.Toporova; Motherland explorers: I.Averbuh; A.Djudavel, I.Korneev, J.Kruchkov; writers: M.Bojatkin, M.Kravchenko, L.Kulichenko; The herou of Social labour M.Rjaboshapki, shipbuilders I.Chornoguz, P.Shcherbukov and others.

Video -, photo -, and audio documents describe us the history of Mykolaiv region; the photo documents have photos of Mykolaiv since its foundation till our days. The events of the war 1941-1945 art introduced to us by the video about liberation of Mykolaiv from Nazi and the consequences of occupation. Films describe us the development of people’s economy after the war.

Archives have scientific and technical documents: designed (the fund of Mykolaiv filial of Ukrainian state city planning institute «Dniprobud»); design and technological (the Main special design and technological office fund of lubricant – filtering equipment); and scientific – searching (the fund of Mykolaiv regional agricultural explorering station).

For informational searching with the aim of protecting your rights and different social needs of citizens different documents are used. They are documents of institutes’ and organizations of German occupational period (1941 - 1944), Mykolaiv address informational office, waiting rooms, country boards, labour communities, building books collections, filtrational files of KOB on Mykolaiv region, unclassified documents of Mykolaiv regional acting committee, the documents of district acting committees village councils,Mykolaiv regional Naziescrime counting committee, metrical books.
